![]() The First Friday Buffet on Friday 5th April was a Portuguese theme and a sellout. We can personally vouch for the quality (and quantity) of the food. To our mind it was exceptional and very well received. ![]() Check the website for Coming Events for upcoming First Friday Buffets. The next one is an 'Italian Theme' - 2 courses for $30 - Excellent food and very good value. ![]() The Jubilee Cup. Bowral Golf Club's Vardon Event was held on Sunday the 7th April 2019. The trophy played for is the Jubilee Cup donated by by Mr J M Oxley to celebrate the club's 60 anniversary. A field of 68 competed for the cup and the winner, with an excellent score of 66, was Thomas Holtz, with a handicap of plus 1, of The Links - Shell Cove Golf Club. Par for the men's course is 69 and Thomas was the only one to break par. The field included many players on plus handicaps. The benign description of the course as a 5406 metre par 69 hides its reputation of being difficult - as the members will attest. ![]() Competing in the Jubilee Cup and pictured here on the first tee were course supervisor Damian Gair, member Chris Boggs, and the clubs previous course supervisor Nathan Bradbury. ![]() Rob Humphreys introduces himself Hello Members, I am Rob Humphreys, your new President. I haven’t had an opportunity to speak to or meet you all yet, so I thought I would introduce myself. I was born in Oxford, England and moved with my wife, Carol, to Sydney in 1966.We have been married for 53 years and have two sons and four granddaughters. I have been in practice as a Chartered Accountant since 1969 and I have also been admitted as a Barrister in NSW, though not in practice. For the last 25 years I have specialised in Forensic Accounting, providing expert accounting testimony for persons and entities involved in commercial disputes. Carol and I were members of Roseville Golf Club for some 35 years. I was on the Board there for 10 years and Carol was on the Ladies Committee at Roseville before spending many years in senior positions, including President at Women’s Golf New South Wales. She was also on the Board of Golf Australia. We moved to Bowral from Turramurra in December 2016 when I retired. Our first consideration after buying a house was where to play our golf. The choice was easy because Bowral Golf Club stood out, with a challenging course layout, friendly and welcoming members and helpful competent staff. We are very happy to be members of Bowral Golf Club and want to contribute to its future development and success. I was appointed to the Board in January this year and was impressed by the professional attitude and commitment of all of the other Board members. A Strategic Plan had been set and I believe that its continued implementation will result in successful operations and a bright future for the Club. I look forward to the challenge. The Website Along with our Website the club is also promoted via Google and Facebook. Both Facebook and 7 products from Google have over 1 billion users. We get statistics to see what activity we have on various platforms. For example 27,601 people found us on Google in March - some of those visited our website - some got directions and some phoned us. This all can be seen in the stats we receive monthly from Google. Our websites are hosted in California and we use a website creation/publishing and hosting company called Weebly. We are one of Weebly's 45,000,000 customers. The graphs below show the number of page views two of our websites got in the last 29 days. | ![]() The 2019 AGM was held in the clubhouse on Thursday 4th April 2019. An AGM is required both by the corporations law and also the club's Constitution. As the email from the office said the following candidates were elected unopposed: Rob Humphreys as President, Dick Hiser as Captain, Helen Chadwick as Vice President, Warren Ryan as Treasurer. There were four candidates for the remaining 3 director positions. The number of directors on the board was changed from 9 to 7 by a Special Resolution passed at the 2018 AGM. The nominations were (in the order that nominations were received) - Linden Toll, Carole Turpie, David Stanley and Blandina Meere. An election by secret ballot was held. Two scrutineers counted the votes and the count resulted in Linden Toll, Carole Turpie, and David Stanley being elected. Paul Carroll and I did not offer ourselves for election. Paul did an excellent job on the Board and followed me as Captain for 3 years, David Stanley took over from Paul, his second term as Captain. For the time being I will be continuing to produce the Club News and it is intended to have entries from time to time from others such board and committee members and staff. Membership ![]() The graph above shows the trends in membership numbers over the last 6 years. The reader can click on the graph and it will be expanded to show more detail. The figures for the years 2013 to 2018 are year-end figures and the 2019 figures are at the beginning of April. Most pleasing is the growth in member numbers, especially those with playing rights. In the graphs the (tiny) numbers refer to the number of members in that category at that time. The ratio of playing members to social members is 76% to 24%. ![]() Dick Hiser is our new Club Captain taking over from retiring Captain David Stanley. Dick is a keen golfer and rejoices in a current GA handicap of 14.4.. Dick, leaving school wanted an outdoor job so he choose to study Surveying. An opurtunity presented itself to train as a pilot for the RAAF and he graduated a qualified fighter pilot with training stints in the USA. Following that career Dick moved to the highlands, joined QANTAS and flew jumbos among other machines. Following retirement Dick enjoyed golf and also became a keen and very fit bike rider - able to do the circle up and down Macquarie pass more than once in a day. Now as a keen golfer he plays golf twice a week with some success. A couple of weeks ago he claimed the Barwon Cup from a group of our club's golfers that visit Barwon Heads Golf Club together once per year. Being Captain is a great job, with it's challenges, I have no doubt that Dick will furfill the role with enthusiasm and ability ![]() Doug Stalley together with Kevin Kenny, David Stanley and I played in the Ambrose on Wednesday 3rd April. Doug, an avid golfer, has been a member of the club since 1988 and was a past president. Doug turns 93 on the 12th April and feels that he may be nearing the end of his golfing career - at least as far as 18 holes goes. David and I were having our last game as Captain and President. We hope, that having relinquished those roles, we may have more success in the future. ![]() Doug joined the club in 1988 and was first elected to the board in 1992 and then vice president in 1994 and 1995. In 1996 he succeeded Don Lawson as President. Doug graduated from Adelaide University with a Master of Economics degree in 1955 and is the author of several books including the book on the history of the club "Bowral Golf Club 1901-2001" which is available to read on the club's website - please click this link- (it will open in a new window.) He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and spent some time in the US before continuing in his academic career in Australia. In our club Doug is the oldest golfing member. Doug always wanted to play his age and the nearest he got was when he was 91 - he went round in a gross 93 - not bad. Turning 93 today the 12th April. Happy birthday, Doug |
